Joshua 1
After years of preparation, mourning, waiting, and wandering, Joshua stands at a defining moment. Moses is gone. The promise remains. And now God speaks—not with a list of options, but with a directive.
“Only be strong and very courageous…” (Joshua 1:7)
The Weight of the Word “Only”
That word only matters.
God doesn’t say, “When you feel ready.”
He doesn’t say, “When the conditions are perfect.”
He doesn’t say, “If you’re confident enough.”
God says only be strong and courageous.
Obedience Before Confidence
In other words, when the time comes to step into obedience, there is no alternative posture. Fear is not presented as a valid option. Hesitation is not listed as a pathway. Retreat is not part of the instruction.
Joshua wasn’t being asked to feel brave—he was being commanded to act brave.
Obedience often arrives before confidence. Strength is rarely felt before the step is taken. Courage is not the absence of fear; it’s the decision to move forward despite it.
The Call Remains the Same
The call hasn’t changed.
The promise hasn’t changed.
The presence hasn’t changed.
Only your response remains.
The Power of Community in Obedience
What stands out in Ezra 10:4 is the community response: “We also are with you.” Obedience was not meant to be carried alone. Courage grows when accountability and support surround the call to change.
The Invitation Still Stands
The invitation remains the same today:
Arise. Take responsibility. Be courageous. And do it.
Not in your own strength—but in response to God’s grace.
Closing Prayer
Lord,
When You call me forward, help me not to hesitate.
I don’t want to delay obedience while waiting for confidence.
Teach me to trust Your presence more than my feelings.
When the moment comes, help me to only be strong and courageous.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
