When the Ingredients Don’t Taste Good

Romans 8:28 is one of the most quoted verses in Scripture—often because we need it to be true.

“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.”

But knowing this verse and living it are two very different things.

Sometimes life doesn’t feel “good” at all. In fact, some seasons taste downright bitter.

Think about baking brownies.

If you sampled each ingredient on its own, you’d probably spit most of them out. Raw flour? Bitter cocoa powder? Plain eggs? Even vanilla extract on its own isn’t very pleasant. None of those ingredients taste good by themselves.

Yet every single one is necessary.

When combined in the right way, at the right time, under the right conditions, they become something rich, satisfying, and deeply enjoyable.

God Works All Things Together

Life works much the same way.

We often judge seasons in isolation—pain, waiting, loss, disappointment, pruning—and decide they are bad because they don’t taste good on their own. But God never promised that every ingredient would be enjoyable. He promised that He would work all of them together for good.

Romans 8:28 doesn’t say everything is good.

It says God is working everything.

The heat of the oven matters.
The timing matters.
The order matters.

And the Master Baker knows exactly what He’s doing.

Trusting the Process

What feels confusing or uncomfortable right now may be essential to what God is forming in you. You don’t see the finished product yet—but He does.

And just like brownies, the goodness is revealed after the process, not during the mixing.

Closing Prayer

Father God, I confess that I often want the outcome without the process. I want the sweetness without the mixing, the growth without the stretching, the promise without the patience. Today, I declare that I trust You as the One who sees the full recipe of my life. When individual moments don’t taste good, remind us that You are still at work. Give me peace in the waiting, faith in the unseen, and confidence that nothing is wasted in Your hands. I know that You are bringing forth something good, even when I don’t yet understand the ingredients.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Reflection Questions:

  1. What “ingredient” in your life right now feels unpleasant or difficult to understand? Can you honestly name it without trying to minimize it?
  2. Where might you be judging a season in isolation instead of trusting God’s ability to combine it with purpose?
  3. What would it look like to surrender control of the recipe and timing back to God this week?
