Eat Ready

“And thus you shall eat it: with a belt on your waist, your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand…” — Exodus 12:11

In Exodus 12, God was preparing Israel for deliverance from Egypt. The Passover meal was about to be eaten, and the final plague would soon fall.

But what stands out is how God told them to eat.

They were sitting down to a meal, yet God instructed them to eat with their belt fastened, sandals on their feet, and staff in their hand.

In other words: eat like people who are about to leave.

This instruction wasn’t just practical—it was deeply symbolic. God was teaching His people to recognize their new identity before their circumstances changed.

The Belt: Anchored in Truth

In ancient culture, a belt gathered loose garments so a person could move quickly. Spiritually, it reminds us to anchor our minds in truth. Israel could no longer think like slaves; they were now God’s covenant people.

Truth still does this for us today. It pulls in old mindsets and prepares us to move forward in what God has called us to.

The Sandals: For Walking in Freedom

Sandals were a sign of readiness and freedom. Slaves often went barefoot. By wearing sandals, Israel was being told to eat like free people before they ever stepped outside of Egypt.

Faith often begins by living from the freedom God declares—even before we see it fully around us.

The Staff: Holding Your Authority

The staff symbolized identity and authority. It was the tool Moses held when God performed miracles. God told them to eat with it in their hands as a reminder that they were not leaving as victims, but as a people led by Him.

Even in a moment of provision, they were not to set down what God had placed in their hands.

Living Ready

The Passover meal marked a moment of transition. Israel ate dressed for the journey because deliverance was near.

This is still a powerful reminder for believers today: live from the identity God has given you, even if your surroundings haven’t caught up yet.

Dress for where God is taking you, not where you have been.

Closing Prayer

Father, thank You for the new identity You have given us in Christ. Help us to live anchored in Your truth, to walk in the freedom You have declared over us, and to hold firmly to the calling You have placed in our hands. Keep our hearts ready and our lives aligned with where You are leading us. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Reflection Questions:

  1. Are there old mindsets or identities you are still holding onto that God has already called you out of?
  2. Where might God be asking you to live from freedom before your circumstances fully change?
  3. What calling or responsibility has God placed in your hands that you need to pick back up?
