God of peace
“Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
— First Epistle to the Thessalononians 5:23
At the close of his letter, Paul offers a prayer that reveals something important about how transformation actually happens in the life of a believer. He begins by calling God “the God of peace.”
That description is intentional.
Peace in Scripture is not merely a feeling or the absence of conflict. Peace describes the nature of God Himself. Before peace is something we experience, it is someone we encounter.
When Paul refers to the God of peace, he is pointing to the character and presence of God—the place where our striving ends and surrender begins.
Peace is the Environment of Sanctification
Paul prays that this God of peace would “sanctify you completely.” Sanctification means to be set apart, purified, and formed into the likeness of Christ.
Notice that Paul does not say, “Sanctify yourselves.” Instead, he prays that God Himself would do it.
This reminds us that transformation is ultimately the work of the Holy Spirit. While we participate through obedience and surrender, we cannot produce holiness through effort alone. The Spirit performs the deep work within us.
And this work is released in the atmosphere of surrender.
When we yield to the Person of Peace, something begins to happen. Our anxious striving loosens. Our hearts soften toward God. And the Holy Spirit begins to actively shape us from the inside out.
The Spirit Transforms the Whole Person
Paul describes the scope of this work: that our spirit, soul, and body would be preserved blameless.
God’s sanctifying work touches every part of who we are.
- Spirit – our relationship and communion with God
- Soul – our mind, will, and emotions
- Body – the way we live, act, and move through the world
The Holy Spirit does not just change what we believe. He transforms how we think, how we respond, and how we live. But this work begins when we stop striving and start surrendering. Peace becomes the doorway through which the Spirit works.
Surrender Before Transformation
Many believers try to pursue holiness through discipline alone. While spiritual disciplines are important, sanctification is not ultimately powered by human effort.
It is powered by the presence of God.
When we surrender to Him—when we rest in the God of peace—the Holy Spirit begins to move within us, aligning our thoughts, desires, and actions with the character of Christ.
Our role is surrender. The Spirit’s role is transformation.
Prepared for His Coming
Paul ends by pointing to the goal of this process: that we would be “preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
God is preparing His people. Through the ongoing work of the Holy Spirit, He is shaping lives that reflect His nature and are ready for His appearing.
The encouragement for every believer is this: the same God who calls us to holiness is the one who accomplishes it.
Just one verse later Paul reassures them:
“He who calls you is faithful, who also will do it.”
— First Epistle to the Thessalononians 5:24
We surrender to the God of peace—and the Holy Spirit faithfully does the work of sanctification within us.
Closing Prayer
God of peace,
I surrender myself to You. Quiet the places in my heart that strive and worry. Teach me to rest in Your presence. As I yield to You, let Your Holy Spirit sanctify me completely—spirit, soul, and body. Shape my life so that it reflects Jesus and prepares me for His coming. I trust that You are faithful to finish what You have begun in me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
