The Salt
In the Old Testament, God gave a fascinating instruction regarding offerings. In Leviticus 2:13, He said:
“And every offering of your grain offering you shall season with salt; you shall not allow the salt of the covenant of your God to be lacking from your grain offering. With all your offerings you shall offer salt.”(NKJV)
The Meaning Behind Salt in the Offering
At first glance, this might seem like a small detail in the sacrificial system. But Scripture rarely includes details without meaning. The presence of salt in the offering carried deep symbolism.
Salt in the ancient world represented preservation, purity, and permanence. It prevented decay and added flavor. But more importantly, God referred to it as “the salt of the covenant.”
A Covenant of Salt
This phrase appears again in Numbers 18:19, where God describes His promise as a “covenant of salt forever before the Lord.” In other words, salt symbolized a covenant that would not spoil, fade, or break. It represented the enduring, faithful relationship between God and His people.
Every time an offering was presented with salt, it was a reminder that the worshiper was not simply performing a ritual—they were participating in a lasting covenant with God.
You Are the Salt of the Earth
Then Jesus brings this imagery forward into our lives today. In Matthew 5:13, He says:
“You are the salt of the earth.”
Notice He didn’t say we merely carry salt or talk about salt.
He said we are salt.
Living as an Expression of Christ
This means our lives themselves are meant to reflect and preserve the covenant relationship between God and His people. And that happens through more than words.
It happens in the way we act. It happens in the way we love.
When we forgive, show kindness, extend mercy, and walk in humility, we demonstrate the reality of God’s covenant to the world around us. Our lives become evidence that His relationship with His people is real, enduring, and transforming.
Salt Is Meant to Be Applied
Salt doesn’t just sit on the table—it is meant to be applied. It changes whatever it touches.
In the same way, when we truly walk with God, our presence should preserve hope, bring life, and add the flavor of heaven to the environments we step into.
We don’t just talk about the covenant. We become living expressions of it. Our lives become the offering.
Closing Prayer
Lord,
Thank You for inviting me into an eternal covenant with You. Help me not only speak about Your love, but to live it in the way I treat others. Let my life reflect Your kindness, Your faithfulness, and Your mercy. Teach me to be salt in the places You have positioned me—preserving hope, bringing life, and pointing people toward You. May my actions and my love become a living testimony of Your enduring covenant. In Jesus name, Amen.
