The Futility of False Fire
So they cried aloud, and cut themselves, as was their custom, with knives and lances, until the blood gushed out on them. —1 Kings 18:28 (NKJV)
The prophets of Baal exhausted themselves trying to summon a fire that would never fall. They cried out louder, slashed themselves with knives and lances, spilling their own blood in desperation. No matter how extreme their efforts, the altar remained cold—because the god they called on had no power to respond.
The Modern Struggle of Striving
How often do we do the same? We strive for affirmation from empty sources—chasing success, approval, or identity in things that were never meant to define us. We perform, push, and pour ourselves out, hoping for a spark that will prove we matter. But in the end, our striving only leaves us weary and worn.
True Fire Comes From Presence
True fire—God’s fire—doesn’t come through performance. It comes through presence. Not by cutting ourselves down to be seen, but by surrendering to the One who already sees. If you’re tired, ask yourself: Am I dancing for a false fire? Return to the altar of the Lord. Rest from the hustle. And trust that His fire still falls on hearts that are yielded, still, and willing.
