God’s Design for the Lampstand
When God instructed Moses to make the lampstand for the Tabernacle, He was incredibly specific.
In Book of Exodus 25:37, God told Moses to arrange the lamps so that “they give light in front of it.” The light of the lampstand was designed to shine forward.
That detail carries a powerful spiritual principle.
Formed Through Pressure for a Purpose
The lampstand itself was hammered from a single piece of gold. It was shaped through pressure and formed with intention. Yet once it was finished, the light it produced wasn’t aimed backward toward the hammering process—it was aimed forward, illuminating what was ahead.
This mirrors how God works in our lives.
God’s Word Lights the Path Ahead
In Psalms 119:105, we read:
“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”
God’s Word illuminates our next step and our future path. It doesn’t exist to keep us stuck rehearsing yesterday. Instead, it provides clarity for where God is leading us now.
Shining Light that Guides Others
Jesus builds on this idea in Gospel of Matthew 5:16:
“Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”
Notice what Jesus does not say. He does not tell us to shine a light on people’s failures. Instead, He calls us to shine in a way that points others toward God.
Light in the Kingdom isn’t meant to shame people—it’s meant to guide them.
Pressing Forward Instead of Looking Back
The apostle Paul gives another layer to this in Philippians 3:13–14:
“Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal…”
Paul understood something many believers struggle to grasp: progress in the Kingdom requires a forward focus. While our past may shape us, it is not meant to define us.
Helping Others See Their Destiny
The same is true in how we interact with others. As followers of Jesus, our words and actions should help people see who they are becoming, not just who they once were.
When we walk in the light of Christ, we begin to look at people differently. We start recognizing God’s design in them. We start speaking life into their calling. We start helping illuminate the path God has placed before them.
In other words, we shine light that helps people move toward their destiny. Just like the lampstand in the Tabernacle, our light is meant to face forward.
Closing Prayer
Lord, thank You for being the light that guides my life. Help me to keep my eyes fixed on where You are leading rather than where I have been. Teach me to see others through Your eyes and to speak words that encourage, build, and direct them toward their purpose. Let my life shine in a way that points people to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
